What Is Masking?
Masking is the act of consciously (or subconsciously) hiding your ADHD traits to appear more “normal.” It can involve:
- Pretending to be organized
- Nodding through meetings you spaced out in
- Overcompensating with extra hours
- Mimicking the habits of high-performing neurotypicals
The Emotional Toll
Constant masking leads to burnout, anxiety, and impostor syndrome. You’re playing a role instead of being yourself. Over time, this can erode confidence, creativity, and even job satisfaction.

How to Unmask Safely
- Start with Safe Spaces: Trusted colleagues or ADHD ERGs (Employee Resource Groups)

- Redefine Professionalism: Show that authenticity can drive better results
Masking is survival, but it’s not success. The more we allow ourselves to show up authentically, the more inclusive,and innovative, our workplaces become.
